Jaguar Land Rover Patent Describes an In-Car Defibrillator for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

Jaguar Land Rover in-car defibrillator patent: Jaguar Land Rover Patent: A patent filed with the UK Intellectual Property Office describes an automated external defibrillator that could plug into a hybrid or electric vehicle's high-voltage system, potentially making life-saving cardiac devices more widely available. The filing does not confirm production plans.

Jaguar Land Rover in-car defibrillator patent, Digi Mart USA News: Having a defibrillator close at hand can make the difference between life and death for someone experiencing life-threatening arrhythmia. The medical device administers an electric shock to restart a heart rhythm when it goes off track, helping prevent cardiac arrest.

CarBuzz recently found a patent filed by Jaguar Land Rover with the UK Intellectual Property Office, showing an automated external defibrillator (AED) compatible with an electric or hybrid vehicle. According to the patent’s description, the device would plug directly into a hybrid or fully electric car.

An external high-voltage input port would draw 200 volts or more from the vehicle’s electrical system, and the device would otherwise function like a typical AED. An output port would connect the electrodes, and audio instructions would be delivered through a speaker.

A small user interface would allow the operator to control the electrical charge transmitted through the device. The AED would need to be light and compact so users could handle and transport it easily.

Portable AEDs have been available for some time, but they are not as widely accessible as many would like. The patent’s concept could help address that shortage, particularly if adopted at scale, because electrification is becoming more common.

Patent filings do not guarantee that such technology will appear in future vehicles, and they are often used primarily to protect intellectual property. A filing cannot be taken as confirmation of production intent.
