Meteorologist Says El Niño Could Persist Through 2028

El Niño forecast through 2028: Mario Navarro, director of the Salsipuedes Climatological Observatory, says the phenomenon could last well beyond 2026, extending into early 2028. He says it could bring significant benefits to Argentina's agricultural economy if managed well, with rainfall expected to be uneven and localized.

El Niño forecast through 2028, Digi Mart USA News (Argentina): Mario Navarro, director of the Salsipuedes Climatological Observatory, has warned that the El Niño phenomenon is expected to persist “for a long time,” extending into the early months of 2028. He said the event will have varying impacts across the planet and, in Argentina’s case, could bring significant benefits to the agricultural economy “if we know how to do things right.”

Navarro said El Niño is “stretching itself, slowly and calmly, due to the low-pressure system that is moving in.” He added that it “will stay for a long time, not only this 2026, but also 2027 and 2028.”

Speaking to the Agrositio channel, Navarro said the peak of the phenomenon is expected to occur from the second half of February 2027. He said that in March “it rains everywhere,” though he clarified that overall precipitation will be “balanced.”

“There may be events of 300 millimeters in a single day, but they will not be widespread,” he forecast. He explained that rainfall will fall “every 20, 50, 100 square kilometers.”

He pointed to possible significant events in the center-east and southeast of the province of Córdoba, the center, south-southeast and east of Santa Fe, the east, northeast and south-southeast of Buenos Aires, the north-northeast of La Pampa, and the center-east and southeast of Entre Ríos, with significant rainfall over short periods.
