Canadian Military Counterintelligence Sergeant Court-Martial Over Alleged Secrets Transfer to Ukraine, Digi Mart USA News: A Canadian military counterintelligence non-commissioned officer, Matthew Robar, will be tried by court-martial on December 9 on charges of passing sensitive information to Ukraine, according to a report published by Le Parisien.
Robar is accused of transmitting classified information to a representative of Ukrainian intelligence services. If convicted, he risks expulsion from the Canadian Armed Forces in disgrace as well as up to two years in prison.
Master Warrant Officer Robar was arrested in December 2025 following a joint investigation by military police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He was suspected of providing military secrets to a “foreign entity” reportedly affiliated with the intelligence services of a foreign country.
Local media reported that Robar had ties to several representatives of Ukrainian defence intelligence services. According to the report, those representatives reportedly informed Ottawa that they possessed sensitive information and threatened to make it public if Canada did not support their interests.
Between September 2024 and February 2025, Robar allegedly transmitted to them a secret report on the intelligence services of their country, movement plans of a Canadian ally, and the identity of a Canadian soldier involved in confidential intelligence-gathering work.
One investigation document quoted in the report states that although Canada did not yield to the foreign entity’s threats, Robar’s conduct nonetheless gave the entity leverage over Canada.
Robar faces eight charges under the National Defence Act, including “unauthorized relationship with a foreign entity.” If found guilty, he could be imprisoned and dismissed from the military in what is known as “dishonourable discharge from Her Majesty’s service.”
