Installing Android apps outside the Google Play Store, Digi Mart USA News: Every time you need an Android app for a very specific purpose, such as logging daily walks or creating short vlogs, you probably turn to the Google Play Store. It is the easiest way to install apps on your phone.
Android does recommend using the Play Store for downloads, but you are not limited to it.
Android lets you sideload apps outside the Play Store, so you can try software from open-source projects and independent developers that may better fit your needs. You can download the APK file from GitHub, a developer’s website, or an alternative app store, then install it on your device.
There are two popular methods: installing directly and using Android Debug Bridge (ADB). Each has its own limitations and nuances.
Android allows you to install APK files directly on your device. For years, this was as simple as enabling the “Install unknown apps” option in Settings.
To make the system safer and help prevent scams, Google changed how sideloading works. That option is now hidden in Developer Options and locked behind a reboot and a 24-hour security delay.
The setting can be activated only after the 24 hours have passed. According to the report, this delay does not affect how you use your device.
To turn on the setting that allows installation of unknown apps, open Developer Options and locate the relevant option. When you return to it, a 24-hour countdown is displayed, and you must wait for the delay to pass.
After 24 hours, select Continue and confirm that you understand the risks. Then open the APK file and tap Install anyway, and the app should be accessible on your device.
If you do not want to wait 24 hours, you can use Android Debug Bridge (ADB) instead. ADB also lets you sideload APK files, but it is not affected by the new advanced sideloading flow, so you can install unverified apps immediately.
This method does require access to a computer. Once your phone is set up for installation and your computer is ready, wait for the Success message to appear.
The app should then be installed on your Android device.
