Toto Wolff and Mercedes-AMG: From Formula 1 Dominance to a New Electric Era

Toto Wolff Mercedes-AMG electric sports car Mexico visit: Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team chief Toto Wolff visited Mexico during the Grand Prix weekend, linking the team's championship legacy with the brand's new fully electric AMG GT 4-Door Coupé, unveiled during AMG Night in Mexico City.

Toto Wolff Mercedes-AMG electric sports car Mexico visit, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City, Mexico): The director of Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team visited Mexico during the Grand Prix weekend, in a celebration that connected the German team’s legacy with the future of its electric performance cars.

Eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships do not come by chance. Behind Mercedes’ historic run in Formula 1 is a combination of engineering, strategy and decisions that have defined much of Toto Wolff’s tenure leading the German team.

His recent visit to Mexico, during the Grand Prix weekend, linked that sporting legacy with the future of Mercedes-AMG, which is beginning a new chapter centered on electrification and high performance.

The relationship between Mercedes and Formula 1 goes well beyond results on the track. For the German company, motorsport also represents a space for technological experimentation whose lessons can contribute to the development of new generations of vehicles.

Since Toto Wolff took on a leadership role at Mercedes in 2013, the team has become one of the protagonists of modern Formula 1. Between 2014 and 2021, Mercedes won eight consecutive Constructors’ titles, an unprecedented streak in the category.

During that period, Lewis Hamilton won six world drivers’ championships with the team, while Nico Rosberg won his in 2016.

Those results coincided with the introduction of hybrid power units, a technical transformation that changed the way teams competed and placed greater emphasis on energy efficiency, energy recovery and the management of electrical systems.

The experience gained during those years forms part of Mercedes’ technological knowledge, although solutions developed for competition do not necessarily transfer directly to production cars.

Today, with a new generation of drivers and major changes to Formula 1’s technical regulations, Mercedes continues its participation in the championship under Wolff’s direction.

During his visit to Mexico City, the executive highlighted the growing importance of the Mexican Grand Prix on the calendar and spoke about the team’s future, in which young drivers such as Kimi Antonelli hold an important role.

Wolff’s presence in Mexico coincided with the presentation of a vehicle representing another transformation underway at the German company: the new fully electric Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé.

The vehicle was presented by Derrick Halvorsen, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Mexico, during AMG Night, the brand’s traditional celebration in the context of the Grand Prix.

Developed on the AMG.EA architecture, conceived specifically for high-performance electric sports cars, the model incorporates three axial flux motors, a technology that delivers high power density in relatively compact systems.

It also integrates a battery with direct cell cooling, designed to control temperatures and maintain performance under demanding conditions.

According to information provided by Mercedes-Benz, its most powerful configuration reaches up to 860 kW, equivalent to approximately 1,169 horsepower.

The development of this new generation of vehicles is also related to research carried out for the CONCEPT AMG GT XX, a prototype that in 2025 took part in an endurance test at the Nardò circuit in Italy.

Although the demands of a production car differ from those of a Formula 1 single-seater, both share engineering challenges related to power, efficiency and thermal control.

The presentation of the electric sports car was one of the central moments of AMG Night, a celebration organized by Mercedes-Benz Mexico at the Frontón Bucareli, which brought together brand guests and representatives of the motorsport world.

In addition to Toto Wolff’s participation, the evening featured a performance by American DJ and producer Diplo, a three-time Grammy Award winner, followed by a set from Mexican DJ Escuby.

Watchmaking was also present through IWC Schaffhausen, a firm that maintains a partnership with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team. As part of the countdown to the car’s reveal, screens showed the Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, a piece reflecting the relationship between Swiss watchmaking and the German team.

The experience included cocktails by Handshake, Hanky Panky and Long Story Short, as well as food offerings from Tacos Atarantados, Myka and Randy’s Donuts.

The transition to electric mobility poses new challenges for sports car manufacturers. It is no longer only about developing engines capable of generating large amounts of power, but also about managing energy, controlling temperatures and maintaining consistent performance.

In that scenario, Mercedes-AMG seeks to draw on its engineering and competition experience to develop vehicles that meet new technological demands without abandoning its sporting identity.

Wolff’s presence in Mexico brought together two moments in the brand’s history: the legacy built during a period of dominance in Formula 1 and the transformation represented by a new generation of electric sports cars.
