Diego Góngora Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic archery debut, Digi Mart USA News: Quintana Roo archer Diego Góngora is living his international debut as a dream built on discipline, achieved goals and a strong family bond, according to an interview he gave to the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM). His path in archery began with his sister Alexa Góngora, who competed at the 2022 CONADE National Games.
Seeing her travel and compete inspired him to try the sport. “I chose it because my sister went to the 2022 National and mainly because I saw her travel and I wanted to do the same.
At the end of the day it’s because of my sister that I started, and this story has been written thanks to her,” the archer said.
After a solid development process between 2022 and 2024, Góngora found in archery the ideal vehicle to reach the international stage. Competing at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games represents the fulfillment of a long-held goal and a personal promise.
“Since I entered archery, I promised my coach that I would go to a Youth Olympic Games, and seeing that it came true is something very beautiful,” he said with emotion.
The native of Chetumal earned the 16th seed in the men’s individual event. He faced Israel’s Yuval Raz in the round of 16 at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium, fighting arrow by arrow to tie the score 5-5 in the regular sets.
The match went to a shoot-off, where Raz scored a perfect 10 against Góngora’s 8, ending a painful but valuable elimination in the individual tournament.
Despite the demanding acclimatization and the physical challenge of the time difference, Góngora said the heat and setting were excellent. “The heat here is very good, impressive; the time change throws me off a bit, but the venue is super good,” he told the COM.
Góngora remains focused on the podium. His next opportunity comes in the mixed team event, where he will team up with fellow Mexican Maya Casas.
The Mexican pair will begin their campaign in the round of 16 against the Spanish pair.
