Kristaps Porzingis Warriors contract status, Digi Mart USA News: The Golden State Warriors are on a roll and hoping to keep that momentum going tonight against the perpetually rebuilding Orlando Magic. A minor wrinkle has appeared, a deepening of a known issue already affecting the season’s plan.
Kristaps Porzingis announced that he is “stepping away.”
While it is not a huge immediate subtraction given the team’s current success playing without him, this is the finalization of a disheartening loss of talent that will certainly affect the team, even as the situation plays out.
Orlando is 2-6 through eight games, and the numbers are rough: 29th in scoring at 105.5 points per game, 25th in offensive rating, and 25th in defensive rating. In their defense, offensive engine Paolo Banchero rolled his ankle in the season opener, and Franz Wagner has not done enough to cover the absence.
Orlando will be without Banchero and Jalen Suggs tonight.
On the Warriors’ side, Draymond Green (elbow) and Gary Payton (calf) join Gui Santos on the Questionable list. After tonight, there is one more game against the Pelicans to close out this successful home stand.

The season has unfolded with Porzingis in an unusual way, though not entirely unexpected. Golden State knew it was taking a major roster gamble, and while it has not been a total failure, the Warriors have not clearly hit the mark.
The situation began in preseason, when Porzingis’s status moved from unknown, to something related to his illness, and eventually to a largely agnostic outlook from coach Steve Kerr, who addressed the issue by setting it aside. “Other than my concern for him and his own well-being, I don’t think of it,” Kerr said.
“When we come to practice, I don’t think of it. Because I have to focus on the guys who are here, and that’s my concern when we come into the building.”
Since then, the Warriors and Porzingis have kept matters fairly low key, until a few days ago, when Golden State was widely reported to be withholding pay, citing a failure to “render services.” With around $20 million on the books this year and only a small guarantee next year, the situation is far from ideal but may allow the Warriors to make in-season adjustments.
This is not a formal retirement, so the team and Porzingis are back in talks to “find a solution that makes sense.”
Porzingis is reportedly amenable to a trade and could become a relatively appealing contract for a rival team seeking to shed longer-term salary or save immediate money. He has only $3 million guaranteed on his deal next season, and the expectation is that he would be open to a post-trade buyout that would save a team more than that.
The NBA trade deadline is February 11, and according to reports, Golden State had been looking for potential trade partners a month ago, if not longer. This is where it becomes difficult for the Warriors.
The low guarantee next season was risk mitigation for exactly this scenario.
That is easier said than done. Golden State is looking for a player in the $15 to $20 million range, either in a standalone deal or paired with other marginal personnel to match salaries.
However, the team has been reluctant to attach future first-round picks or take on long-term salary, so Porzingis alone as salary ballast does not offer many opportunities.
Any such outcome would be a stretch, but the Warriors have done this before. A bigger move could involve a player such as Jalen Smith or Wendell Carter Jr.; there were also many rumors surrounding Herb Jones of the Pelicans.
Those players are intriguing precisely because they are good, and realistic trades for them would likely cost the Warriors additional assets, which the team has been reluctant to give up as part of its multi-year strategy.
For the players on the court, this is largely background noise. The team is winning and playing at a high level, so there is little urgency to change course.
Kerr has set the tone: focus on the players who are here. The emergence of Charles Bassey alone has softened much of the impact of Porzingis’s absence.
Do not expect a Porzingis trade any time soon, but if the Warriors keep playing as they have, it may not matter much. Orlando is struggling without some of its best players, and the Warriors have found a balance that is working.
Curry, Yax, Podz, Bassey, Melton, Williams and Green lead a deep group. The questions about how this roster will hold together over a long season are getting quieter, but that is a problem for another night.
For now, Golden State has enough contributors and momentum to keep rolling, and the Magic should offer a chance to extend this home stand win streak.
