Kristaps Porzingis Golden State Warriors contract situation, Digi Mart USA News: The Golden State Warriors are on a roll and hope to keep their momentum going Saturday against the Orlando Magic. A new wrinkle has emerged in the season’s roster plan, as Kristaps Porzingis announced that he is “stepping away.”

While it is not a major immediate loss given the team’s success without him, the development finalizes a significant loss of talent that will affect the team even as the situation plays out.

Orlando is 2-6 through eight games and ranks 29th in scoring at 105.5 points per game, 25th in offensive rating and 25th in defensive rating. Offensive engine Paolo Banchero rolled his ankle in the season opener, and Franz Wagner has not done enough to cover his absence.

Orlando will be without Banchero and Jalen Suggs tonight.

On the Warriors’ side, Draymond Green (elbow) and Gary Payton (calf) join Gui Santos on the Questionable list. After tonight, Golden State has one more game, against the New Orleans Pelicans, to close out this home stand.

WHO: Golden State Warriors (6-3) vs. Orlando Magic (2-6)

WHEN: Saturday, November 7, 2026; 5:30 p.m. PDT

The season has unfolded with Porzingis in a way that is unusual but not unexpected. Golden State knew it was taking a major roster gamble, and while it has not been a total failure, the Warriors have not clearly succeeded either.

The situation began in preseason, when Porzingis’s status moved from unknown, to something related to his illness, and then to a fully agnostic outlook from coach Steve Kerr, who said he had set the issue aside. “Other than my concern for him and his own well-being, I don’t think of it,” Kerr said.

“When we come to practice, I don’t think of it. Because I have to focus on the guys who are here, and that’s my concern when we come into the building.”

Since then, the Warriors and Porzingis have kept matters fairly low key until a few days ago, when Golden State was widely reported to be withholding pay, citing a failure to “render services.” With around $20 million on the books this year and only a small guarantee next year, the situation is far from ideal, but it may allow the Warriors to make in-season adjustments.

This is not a formal retirement, and the team and Porzingis are back in talks to “find a solution that makes sense.”

Porzingis is reportedly open to a trade and could become a relatively appealing contract for a rival team seeking to shed longer-term salary or save money immediately. He has only $3 million guaranteed next season, and the expectation is that he would be open to a post-trade buyout that would save a team more than that.

The NBA trade deadline is February 11, and according to reports, Golden State had been looking for trade partners a month ago, if not longer. Such planning requires layers of contingency, and the low guarantee next season was risk mitigation for exactly this scenario.

That is easier said than done. Golden State is reportedly seeking a player in the $15 million to $20 million range, either in a standalone deal or paired with other marginal personnel to match salaries.

The team has been reluctant to attach future first-round picks or take on long-term salary, so Porzingis as salary ballast alone offers limited opportunities.

Any such outcome would be a stretch, though the Warriors have done this before. A bigger swing would target a player such as Jalen Smith or Wendell Carter Jr.; there were also rumors surrounding Herb Jones of the Pelicans.

Those players are attractive precisely because they are good, and realistic trades for them would likely cost the Warriors additional assets, which the team has been reluctant to give up as part of its multi-year strategy.

For players on the court, this is largely background noise. The team is winning and playing at a high level, so there is little imperative to change anything right now.

Kerr has set the tone: focus on the players who are here. The emergence of Charles Bassey alone has eased much of the impact of losing Porzingis, though more talent on the court is always better.

A Porzingis trade does not appear imminent, but if the Warriors keep playing as they have, it may not matter much. Orlando is struggling without some of its best players, and Golden State has found a balance that is working, with Curry, Yax, Podz, Bassey, Melton, Williams and Green among the contributors.

Questions about how the roster will come together over a long season are quieter for now. Golden State has enough contributors and momentum to keep the run going, and the Magic should offer another chance to extend this home stand win streak.
