F1 Sao Paulo GP qualifying, Digi Mart USA News (Interlagos, Brazil): Mercedes driver George Russell spoke after qualifying second for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, congratulating Lando Norris on his result.

Russell said the lap he aborted was the pole lap and described it as a misjudgement on his team’s side. “We need to understand what happened.

Obviously the rain was coming and we should have just finished the lap,” he said.

Russell will start seventh on Sunday because of a grid penalty. Asked about the race, he said it depends on the weather and that he felt good on the track.

Russell said it was the first time in a while he had felt confident in the car, and that he felt more confident in the wet than in the dry, which he said he did not fully understand. “I felt more like myself, was in the fight for pole every single lap.

Unfortunately when it mattered, we didn’t execute.”
