Toluca-Mexico highway avocado truck overturn, Digi Mart USA News (Ocoyoacac, State of Mexico): A three-and-a-half-ton truck loaded with avocados lay on its side on the Toluca-Mexico highway the morning before this report, after its driver lost control while heading toward Mexico City. The vehicle, which had traveled from Michoacán, overturned on its left side near the community of San Miguel Ameyalco in Ocoyoacac, shortly before the La Marquesa dining corridor.
According to initial reports from security agencies, the driver attempted a sudden maneuver that sent the vehicle off the road. The heavy truck came to rest across the central lanes, immediately causing a traffic jam several kilometers long in the direction of the capital.
Residents and drivers quickly noticed the fruit scattered across the pavement.
Within minutes, dozens of people gathered at the scene with plastic bags and sacks to collect as much fruit as possible. Witnesses said the looting continued for several minutes without any authority intervening.
Some people reportedly climbed onto the bed of the overturned truck to take more product, and the cargo, bound for Mexico City markets, was divided among community residents and motorists who stopped along the roadside.
Members of the National Guard, Highways division, arrived at the site minutes later to cordon off the area and disperse onlookers still lingering nearby. Officers set up a traffic operation to prevent secondary accidents, as the mixture of spilled oil, crushed fruit and metal debris made the pavement extremely slippery.
