Hunger Games Press Tour Fashion Pushes Method Dressing to Its Limits

Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping press tour fashion and method dressing: Stars including Elle Fanning, Mckenna Grace and Ariana Grande are using over-the-top red carpet looks that reference their characters and projects, raising questions about how far the trend can go.

Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping press tour fashion and method dressing, Digi Mart USA News: Another Hunger Games movie, a prequel to the original series, premieres later this month, and with it comes another press tour full of far-fetched fashion. As promotional events stack up for Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the outlandish style of the Capitol, the wealthy city of the dystopian nation of Panem, is again on display in the cast members’ looks.

Elle Fanning plays a young Effie Trinket, a Capitol stylist who dresses the young tributes in fanciful fashions and dresses herself the same way. For a London fan screening, she wore a Robert Wun gown from his Fall 2026 couture collection.

The look began with a music-box-style ballerina atop a bubblegum pink fascinator, and the matching gown featured a doubled-up bodice with an outer layer that appears to peel away above a full tulle skirt in dusty pink.

For her other appearances, Fanning has settled into a near-uniform of precisely tailored skirt suits, each paired with a coordinating fascinator tilted above her brow. Her choices include a soft pink pleated Valentino suit with a ruffled collar, gloves and a butterfly-trimmed chapeau, a sharp-shouldered deep green satin version from Demna’s Gucci, and a floral, bow-embellished look from Vivienne Westwood.

The styling is feminine in a way that feels both futuristic and retro, consistent with Capitol fashion.

Fanning’s stylist, Samantha McMillen, has been open about the references to the character, with captions such as “Gucci Effie | @demna puts ‘The Hunger’ into @thehungergames” and “Elle bringing 🦋 ‘Sunrise’ 🦋 to the Academy Gala.” Costar Mckenna Grace recently recreated a Katniss Everdeen Capitol tour look in which the dress appeared to catch fire. Created by Vietnamese designer Cong Tri, known for sculptural silhouettes, the recreation omitted real pyrotechnics but printed graphic flames onto the skirt and bodice.

With stylist Molly Dickson, Grace also revived Katniss’s wedding dress in a frothy white, silver-embellished gown by Monique Lhuillier.

The films all examine a dystopian society sustained by the Hunger Games, at different points on the timeline. In the first film, the older Effie uses a press tour to build a narrative around Katniss and fellow tribute Peeta Mellark and win favor with the audience through larger-than-life fashion.

The fire dress referenced Katniss’s district and its coal mining industry, while the wedding dress was meant to suggest a love story between the two. The looks are designed to be projected to surrounding communities and draw as much attention as possible, since the characters can later benefit from the loyalties and sympathies the theatrics generate.

Method dressing, the practice of theming press tour looks around an actor’s current project, has become common only in recent years. It took hold through the work of stylist Law Roach and Zendaya on the Dune and Spider-Man franchises, Challengers and The Drama.

It was commercially crystallized in 2023 by stylist Andrew Mukamal and Margot Robbie around Barbie, a press tour that generated enough digital attention to earn its own coffee-table book, and more recently around Wuthering Heights. The approach has since attracted stars such as Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande promoting Wicked, the new cast of Sense and Sensibility, and Lili Reinhart’s rom-com references for The Love Hypothesis.

At its most basic, the tactic is a reliable way to generate conversation on social media; at its best, it adds depth to a project’s storytelling.

As press tours increasingly focus on social media, it is difficult to isolate the influence of method dressing on the red carpet’s current taste for extremes. Everyone is trying to capture the hype that Met Gala ensembles generate, and looks need to be loud enough to cut through the noise.

That may explain why avant-garde and couture designers such as Wun, who dressed several stars at this year’s Met Gala, are gaining more space at promotional events. Brands such as Standing Ground and Matieres Fecales are also gaining traction as stylists treat the red carpet more like a magazine editorial than an occasion to get dressed up.

Grace and Dickson have also begun drawing on looks outside the films, referencing Jennifer Lawrence’s own style. Lawrence played Katniss in the first movies.

For a Madrid premiere, Grace wore a Miss Sohee couture dress that paid homage to the naked Givenchy dress Lawrence wore to this year’s Golden Globes. The approach feels very meta and raises questions about the role of fashion in these promotional spaces, whether real or fictional.

On the real-world Hunger Games red carpet, the reference is dystopian extravagance. With the rise of method dressing and the celebration of larger, louder looks, the question is whether dystopian extravagance has already become the norm.

In this case, it may not be a matter of life and death, but it could make or break the movie.
