What Trump Convinced Democrats to Accept on the Border

Democrats and Trump's border security stance ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections: a Mexican columnist argues Trump's measures have reduced illegal crossings by more than 80 percent, and that Democrats now share a tougher border approach, though they may move closer to Mexico's views on gun control and the USMCA trade agreement.

Democrats and Trump’s border security stance ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, Digi Mart USA News: The border between Mexico and the United States will never return to the porosity of the past, according to a column published by La Crónica de Hoy, and that issue is not at stake in Tuesday’s election, in which the Trump political movement stands to gain or lose much of its future.

The column argues that other issues could benefit from a Democratic takeover of both chambers of Congress. Gun control, for example, would take a position much closer to Mexico’s, and the USMCA trade agreement would tend to return to its trilateral order.

Border policy, however, would not change, the author writes. Democrats, although they may not openly acknowledge it, were convinced by Trump that border security had been practically nonexistent for too many years.

With measures the column describes as firm, illegal crossings that were already traditional have been reduced by more than 80 percent, and this is the border Democrats want with Mexico, according to the author.
