Alain Prost Formula 1 France exile 1982 Grand Prix controversy, Digi Mart USA News: Four-time world champion Alain Prost, with 51 Grand Prix victories, is one of the most respected figures in Formula 1 today. Yet according to his own account, he was not always applauded in his home country.

Prost became one of the most respected drivers of the 1980s, known for his surgical precision, strategic sense and remarkable consistency. Nothing in his legend suggests a driver who was booed by his own nation.

His career was not an easy path, however. He proved his worth on the track but did not win unanimous approval, especially early on.

The respect his name commands today was not guaranteed at the time.

According to reports, he faced threats, assaults and acts of vandalism while trying to establish himself on the track. Staying focused on lap times under those conditions would have been difficult.

These attacks left a deep mark. Shaken, Prost reportedly moved to Switzerland in the 1980s, a period he says he never forgot.

He attributes the hostility to two specific events.

The first, he says, dates to 1981 and the election of François Mitterrand, when he took political positions. “Perhaps I shouldn’t have, but in the end, sincerely, I didn’t say anything exceptional,” he said, adding that he was “perhaps a little young for that.”

The second, which he describes as more significant, took place on the track before the French public. It involved a team instruction and an incident with René Arnoux at the 1982 French Grand Prix.

In his version, Prost says he was blamed for an action he does not believe he was responsible for. “I had a burned car, death messages.

I was spat on in the street. It happened once or twice, still.

It’s very strange,” he said. He noted the spitting occurred only once or twice.

Prost says he concluded that French public opinion mixes admiration with jealousy and hatred. “That’s where I discovered the 50/50 of this somewhat French mentality, where you have people who adore you, and others who are a mix of jealousy and hatred.

It really disturbed me,” he said.

These are Prost’s own recollections, given years later on television, not findings established by an investigation. The reports do not mention any public response from René Arnoux in this passage.

His career nevertheless took off after he settled in Switzerland, and he went on to become a Formula 1 legend with four world titles and 51 wins.
