Guadalajara International Airport expansion, Digi Mart USA News (Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico): Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) is advancing the transformation of Guadalajara International Airport, one of the country’s leading hubs for air connectivity and economic activity. The project, backed by an investment of more than 22 billion pesos for the 2025-2029 period, includes a second terminal, new road infrastructure and an expansion of operating capacity.
The project is expected to double passenger handling capacity to more than 40 million per year. Guadalajara is part of GAP’s largest investment program in its history, which calls for more than 52 billion pesos to expand and modernize its 12 airports in Mexico during the current five-year period, compared with more than 32 billion pesos spent in 2020-2024.
Of the planned resources, more than 26 billion pesos are allocated to Jalisco, mainly for the airports of Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. For the Guadalajara terminal, the more than 22 billion pesos planned for 2025-2029 are added to 15.9 billion pesos invested between 2020 and 2024, representing close to 38 billion pesos across both periods.
“We are making a long-term commitment to Jalisco and to the economic potential of Guadalajara. This transformation goes beyond building a second terminal: it involves developing the air, ground and logistics infrastructure the region needs to support its growth, attract new business opportunities and strengthen its connection with international markets,” said Raúl Revuelta Musalem, GAP’s chief executive officer.
The main project is the New Terminal 2 (T2) building, which will have a surface area of 109,376 square meters, compared with 81,000 square meters for the current terminal. The new terminal has been designed to meet the criteria needed to obtain LEED Gold certification, incorporating energy efficiency, responsible water use and environmental quality measures.
Construction is 10% complete. The work is expected to conclude in the final quarter of 2028, with operations scheduled to begin between late that year and the first quarter of 2029.
Once operational, the airport is expected to exceed 40 million annual passengers, more than double the 18.7 million it handled in 2025. The expansion responds to growing travel demand and the need to strengthen the operating capacity of a terminal that connects with one of the country’s main industrial and commercial centers.
The project includes improvements to passenger processing, among them 41 automated document kiosks and additional space for inspection, immigration and boarding. GAP aims to speed passenger flow, optimize processing times and incorporate technology intended to improve the passenger experience.
The modernization also includes 17 kilometers of hydraulic concrete road infrastructure covering more than 200,000 square meters, including at-grade sections, elevated structures and ramps, as well as a new access road from Avenida Adolf B. Horn.
The works are intended to improve vehicle circulation, connect both terminals in the future, ease passenger entry and exit, and reduce pressure on the highway toward Chapala, one of the main access routes to the airport.
The expansion also has a logistics dimension. The airport ranks first nationally in the economic value of goods moved by air and third in cargo volume, behind Felipe Ángeles International Airport and Mexico City International Airport.
This position is becoming more significant given the industrial dynamism of Jalisco, where Guadalajara is rapidly consolidating as a logistics hub for high-value goods in Mexico, driven by nearshoring, the semiconductor industry and global e-commerce growth.
In this context, GAP is expanding its air cargo infrastructure with an investment of more than 300 million pesos for its customs-controlled facility, aiming to increase capacity, improve operational efficiency, strengthen its specialization in high-value cargo and prepare for growth in semiconductor transport linked to the transformation of Jalisco’s industrial activity.
Guadalajara currently connects with 69 destinations: 34 domestic, 29 in the United States, two in Canada (Toronto and Vancouver), and cities such as Madrid, Panama City, Bogotá and San José. New routes to Saltillo, Medellín, Guatemala City, New York and Paris-Charles de Gaulle are set to be added and are described as about to begin operating.
GAP’s investment is intended to support Jalisco’s growth, consolidate the airport’s position as an international business and logistics platform, and prepare it to serve rising passenger and cargo demand in the coming years.
