Deb Haaland elected governor of New Mexico, Digi Mart USA News (New Mexico, United States): Democrat Deb Haaland made history on Tuesday by winning the election for governor of New Mexico, defeating Republican candidate Greggory D. Hull, according to The Associated Press.
With the victory, the former congresswoman and former U.S. Secretary of the Interior becomes the first Native American woman to lead a state government in the country’s history.
Haaland, a citizen of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, secured a decisive win after leveraging her national political profile.
Her campaign reportedly raised a record $20 million in campaign funds. She received support from prominent Democratic Party figures, including former President Barack Obama.
Hull is a former mayor who served three terms in one of the state’s most important cities.
The incoming governor focused her campaign on economic relief for households. She promised to expand existing tax credits and increase investment in social protection programs to support working families.
Haaland will succeed fellow Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham, who was barred from seeking reelection due to constitutional term limits.
As she takes office, Haaland will face complex structural challenges. New Mexico has historically been governed by the Democratic Party, yet the state regularly ranks near the bottom nationally on key indicators, including high rates of poverty and crime and significant gaps in its education system.
