Democrats win 2026 US midterms and French left hopes for 2027 presidential election, Digi Mart USA News (Paris, France): The United States has experienced a “blue wave” in the midterm elections held on Tuesday, November 3. The Democratic Party won the majority in the Senate as well as in the House of Representatives, dealing a major setback to Republican President Donald Trump.
The victory was made possible by Democrats flipping historic Republican strongholds such as Iowa, Texas and Kansas.
With less than six months until the French presidential election, the left and La France insoumise (LFI) see a sign of hope in the result, in a race that appears nearly decided in advance. In voting intentions, four-time presidential candidate Marine Le Pen appears unassailable and is shown winning in every scenario.
She is credited with 35 to 37% in the latest Ifop poll for LCI, published November 3.
LFI coordinator Manuel Bompard wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that “after Bolsonaro’s defeat in Brazil, here is Trump’s electoral setback in the United States. Everywhere in the world, popular mobilization is pushing back the far right.” He promised, “In France too, we will do it.” In the Ifop study for LCI, LFI leader Jean-Luc Melenchon maintains and strengthens his position as the second favorite, credited with 17.5% in three of four configurations.
Social democrat Raphael Glucksmann, the Socialist Party candidate, said the American elections “mark the victory of democracy and decency,” and that there is “no fatalism in politics.” He also wrote on X that “corruption established as a system and the politics of hatred suffered a crushing defeat tonight.”
Ecologist candidate Marine Tondelier said the vote “sanctions his apocalyptic second presidency, which made the United States the laughingstock of the world and plunged it into chaos,” and warned that “if our country brings the RN to power next year, it will face the same tragic fate as the United States.”
On the right and center, reactions have been scarcer. MoDem parliamentary group president Marc Fesneau said the result does not end disagreements between the EU and the USA, or tensions over Ukraine, Hormuz or climate, but that “today the sky is clearing for those who refuse to let outrage and brutality dictate the future of the world.”
In the nationalist camp, the Democratic victory has left a bitter taste, with almost no comment. National Rally (RN) president Jordan Bardella, interviewed on RTL to promote his new book Gouverner, said: “We must respect the verdict of the ballot boxes…
voters are sovereign.” He added that “the American intervention in Iran has very serious consequences… there is very certainly a link,” but rejected any sign of a broader anti-nationalist wave: “We are in very different contexts.” Reconquete MEP Sarah Knafo, who has said she draws inspiration from Trumpism, did not react for now.
