Daniel Saborío Grillo Dakar 2026 bronze medal, Digi Mart USA News (Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico): Monterrey swimmer Daniel Saborío Grillo earned his second individual medal at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games on Saturday. The 17-year-old, a distance specialist and student at Prepa Tec in Monterrey, took bronze in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 49.68 seconds.
Saborío Grillo finished behind Bogdan Toropkin of Russia, who competes under a neutral flag, and Oliver Pápai of Hungary, who won gold and silver respectively. He is coached by Carlos Lara and is a scholarship athlete of the Instituto Estatal del Deporte.
“It is a great joy to be a double Mexican medalist in Dakar, and I thank all the people in Monterrey who have been by my side and are part of this double achievement,” Saborío Grillo said. He is the most productive Mexican medal contributor so far at Dakar 2026, having previously placed fifth in the 100-meter freestyle and taken bronze in the 400-meter freestyle.
“The important thing is that in Dakar I left behind many competitive fears and felt that things can be achieved with hard work; I thank my parents for that,” he said in a telephone interview. Saborío Grillo, who won the 2026 Olimpiada Nacional for Nuevo León and gold at the 2026 Central American Games in Santo Domingo, will next aim to qualify for the Lima 2027 Pan American Games.
Saborío Grillo joins Alejandra Orozco and Rodrigo Diego, both divers at Nanjing 2014, as Mexican athletes who have won two medals at the Youth Olympic Games.
