Fiji rugby preparation against France, Lyon, Digi Mart USA News (Lyon, France): Fiji received notable assistance while preparing for its clash with France’s XV on Saturday at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium. The Flying Fijians have spent ten days in the French city, using the facilities of LOU Rugby and receiving advice from a member of the Lyon staff.

AB Zondagh, the attack coach of the Rhône club, personally took part in preparing Fiji’s opponents by analyzing the French team’s play. The collaboration was described as friendly and involved Jake White, Fiji’s new head coach, who is seeking a positive result in his first match in charge.

Fiji established its base camp at the Ruck Hotel on the Gerland site to secure the best possible conditions. The team used LOU training grounds and took part in a practice match against several Lyon players who were not selected for the professional squad.

The preparation was closed to the public.

Zondagh previously worked with White at the Sharks in South Africa during the 2013-2014 season. In comments to Midi Olympique, Zondagh said he prepared the analysis of France’s game on his own time, adding that it did not interfere with his work at LOU.

Zondagh also advised Fiji on its attacking play and aerial game, areas considered crucial against France. White and his staff stressed winning possession and aerial duels, and Fijian players Jiuta Wainiqolo and Iosefo Masi, both at LOU, are considered strong in these areas.

Lyon is currently ranked as the Top 14 team with the most aerial duels won, ahead of Section Paloise. Fiji hopes to use these qualities to contest high balls and disrupt France’s organization.

The staff also set up an unusual drill on pitch number 9 at Gerland, placing a rope about 1.5 meters off the ground between two posts that players had to pass under when entering and leaving the field. The aim was to encourage a low body position when tackling and reduce high tackles, which can lead to sanctions.

White hopes the disciplined, well-prepared squad can challenge France and build toward upcoming major international fixtures.
