Christiane retirement split between Morocco and France, Digi Mart USA News (France): Christiane, an 84-year-old retiree, divides her time between Morocco and France. She says she is nearly 85 and has been widowed for 20 years.
Her career as a humanitarian nurse took her to Morocco and other continents, and she now says she is fulfilling dreams she had considered for her old age.
She rents a modest apartment in the Pyrénées-Orientales, near Perpignan. From Rivesalte airport, she can reach Agadir in about two and a half hours by plane.
She says affordable long-term rentals in Morocco are possible, especially if one moves slightly away from the main tourist areas.
Christiane describes the sea, winter sunshine, souks, hammams and inexpensive taxis as key attractions. She also praises the landscapes, which range from ocean coasts to mountains, and Moroccan cuisine, including tagines, couscous and fish caught the same morning at low prices.
She has travelled as far south as Dakhla, near the desert.
She returns to France about once a month to see family, and says booking flights in advance allows reasonable fares. She also values the friendships she has formed with people from different regions of France and with welcoming Moroccans.
Her practical advice is to carry good repatriation insurance in case of a medical emergency, even though she notes that Morocco has very good hospitals and doctors trained in France. She adds that such formalities may not be necessary for those who travel regularly to France.
Christiane says the hardest part is loneliness, especially after the loss of a partner. She encourages readers to enjoy life fully and to love themselves.
