Diesel Prices Begin Falling at 6,000 French Gas Stations After Strategic Stock Release

French diesel price cuts from strategic stock release: Diesel prices have started falling at 6,000 of France's 10,000 gas stations, averaging 12 euro cents lower after the government released strategic reserves, Commerce Minister Serge Papin said on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

French diesel price cuts from strategic stock release, Digi Mart USA News (France): Diesel prices have begun to fall at 6,000 of France’s 10,000 gas stations, by an average of 12 centimes, after strategic stocks were placed on the market, Commerce Minister Serge Papin said on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Of those 6,000 stations, 4,000 have cut their prices by more than 15 centimes, he added during a press briefing at Bercy with Economy Minister Roland Lescure following a meeting with fuel distributors.

Papin said the decline would continue in the coming days, as the remaining stations gradually lower their prices so that all 10,000 stations eventually follow. The government had announced in October that it would sell 10 million barrels of diesel from strategic stocks to distributors at cost over three months, from November through January, to bring down pump prices, which have been at historically high levels since the start of the conflict in the Middle East.

The destocking began Sunday, November 1.

Papin described it as the first time strategic stocks had been used to lower prices, noting that they were normally used to address shortages. The reduction applies to road diesel as well as domestic heating oil and non-road gasoil, which is used by farmers and construction equipment, he said.

Lescure said the measure covers all 10,000 stations across mainland France, Corsica and the overseas territories, and that it costs the state nothing despite the budget deficit.

Lescure acknowledged that small independent distributors with full tanks may take longer to pass on the reductions. To help them manage their cash flow, the government has introduced a zero-interest loan program for them.

The government plans a full review at the end of the week and has promised to be transparent about the figures.

Oil prices rose slightly on Tuesday, driven by reports of U.S. strikes on an Iranian island in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, following a sharp drop on Monday on hopes of diplomatic progress in the Middle East.

Early Tuesday, Brent crude for January delivery rose 0.94% to $105.75 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate for December delivery climbed 1.23% to $97.65 a barrel.
