Manuel Neuer Bayern Munich injured substitution Mainz, Digi Mart USA News: Manuel Neuer had an unhappy afternoon at Mainz as the 40-year-old Bayern Munich goalkeeper had to be substituted shortly before halftime with a knock. The problem appears to be another issue with his right foot.
The incident came after a Mainz free kick, when Lee struck what seemed to be a 1-1 equalizer. Neuer looked poorly positioned, came off his line, and Tah slightly touched the ball with his head, so Neuer swung his fist at thin air and the ball sailed past him.
The goal was ruled out for a Mainz offside, a stroke of luck for Neuer.
His bad luck continued, however. After the play Neuer remained seated on the pitch and needed treatment, pulling down the sock on his right foot.
It was quickly clear that he could not continue, and Jonas Urbig, age 23, came on for him as expected.
Neuer, now 40 years and 225 days old, became the oldest Bayern player in Bundesliga history, surpassing Bernd Dreher. He had recently missed matches against Freiburg (3-1), Magdeburg (6-1) and Borussia Dortmund (2-2) because of a persistent tendon irritation in his foot, but was back in goal for Bayern’s Champions League win in Madrid earlier this week.
After the match Neuer spoke frankly to Amazon Prime about what had made the past few days difficult: “The pain. Clearly.” He added: “Every day I have had pain when walking.
And when I got up in the morning, today too, I again had pain when walking.”
Despite this, Neuer fought for his place in the lineup. In Madrid he tried an unusual measure: “This morning I was still on the roof terrace in the water, at 14 degrees water temperature.
And little by little it got better and better.”
