Large crane plunges down embankment near Parchim, Germany, requiring full closure of L083 road for recovery, Digi Mart USA News (Parchim, Germany): The driver of a large mobile crane likely had a very different morning in mind. In the early hours of November 6, at about 5 a.m., the 53-year-old driver was traveling between Parchim and Groß Godems with a colleague driving an accompanying vehicle.

Because of oncoming traffic, the driver of the five-axle crane had moved far toward the right edge of the road when the crane left the carriageway. The guardrail could not stop the vehicle from tumbling down the embankment.

The driver was slightly injured and was treated on site by paramedics from the local rescue service. The guardrail was torn from its anchorage and must be replaced over a length of about 150 meters.

According to police, the crane sustained damage of roughly 100,000 euros.

Later in the morning, the volunteer fire department was deployed to bind leaking hydraulic oil and pump out damaged tanks, said Felix Zgonine, press spokesman for the Ludwigslust Police Inspectorate. Traffic had not been blocked or obstructed so far, because the crane was not on the roadway.

That is about to change. The complex recovery of the crane is currently being planned, and no start date has yet been set.

Additional cranes will be used for the operation. For the duration of the work, the L083 between Parchim and Groß Godems must be fully closed, and police plan to announce the closure over radio broadcasts.
