Mexico City extortion case against Foreign Ministry employee, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City, Mexico): Four people have been formally charged, or “vinculados a proceso,” in connection with the alleged extortion of a worker at the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE) in 2021, according to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City.
According to the prosecutor’s office, investigators identified bank accounts that received money from the victim, which led to arrest warrants being issued. Authorities said the suspects were apprehended in Guadalajara, Jalisco, between May and October of this year, in coordination with state investigative authorities.
Investigators said that on June 15, 2021, the victim was at her workplace in the Cuauhtémoc borough of Mexico City when she received a phone call from a man who falsely claimed her boss had been involved in a car accident in which a minor was seriously injured, and that the vehicle’s insurance policy had expired.
During the call, another individual posing as an insurance company adviser provided several bank accounts for payments. The callers demanded one million pesos and threatened harm to her and her superior if she did not hand over the money, the statement said.
The victim made several bank transfers totaling 229,374 pesos. After contacting her boss, she learned that no accident had occurred and that she had been deceived.
As part of the investigation, the prosecutor requested banking and digital information and ordered an accounting expert analysis. These steps identified the receiving accounts, determined the amount of financial damage, and produced evidence of the probable participation of Miriam “N,” Héctor “N,” Claudia “N” and Mayra “N.”
Miriam “N” was arrested on May 14 and formally charged with aggravated extortion the following day. Héctor “N” was arrested by Investigative Police on June 17 and was formally charged with the same offense on June 22.
Claudia “N” was arrested on October 21 and formally charged with aggravated extortion the next day. Mayra “N” was arrested by Investigative Police on October 28 and formally charged with the same offense on October 29, the statement said.
