SEP winter vacation dates 2026-2027 Mexico, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico): The countdown to winter vacation 2026 has begun for millions of basic education students in Mexico. With December approaching, students will be able to enjoy a rest period for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) has already set the official dates for this break in the 2026-2027 school calendar. Parents and students can therefore check when the last day of classes falls, when vacation begins, and when students must return to classrooms in January 2027.
According to the official calendar, winter vacation will begin on Monday, December 21, 2026, and extend through Tuesday, January 5, 2027. However, students will also have no school activities on Wednesday, January 6, due to a suspension of teaching work provided for by the agency.
The measure applies to public and private schools incorporated into the National Education System at the basic levels across all 32 states of Mexico. The break will allow students to pause school activities during the December holidays, including Christmas and New Year.
Students are scheduled to return to classrooms on Thursday, January 7, 2027, the date the SEP set to resume school activities. Because Wednesday, January 6, is also a day without classes, students will have several consecutive days of rest to enjoy Christmas, New Year and Three Kings Day before resuming their studies.
The vacation period set by the Secretaría de Educación Pública applies to students in basic education, which includes preschool, primary school and secondary school. It covers both public schools and private schools incorporated into the National Education System.
Normal schools and teacher-training institutions follow a separate school calendar, so their activity periods should be checked separately.
The official calendar also lists other class suspensions in 2027: Friday, January 29 (Technical School Council); Monday, February 1 (Anniversary of the Mexican Constitution); Friday, February 26 (Technical School Council); Monday, March 15 (Birth of Benito Juárez); Friday, April 30 (Technical School Council); Wednesday, May 5 (Commemoration of the Battle of Puebla); Friday, May 28 (Technical School Council); and Friday, June 25 (Technical School Council).
Additional scheduled periods include Holy Week vacation from March 22 to April 2, 2027, and summer vacation starting July 9, 2027. Other dates in the calendar include enrollment pre-registration from February 2 to 12, 2027, grade reporting on Friday, March 5, 2027, evaluation result reporting from March 16 to 19, 2027, grade reporting on Friday, July 2, 2027, and evaluation result reporting on Thursday, July 8 and Friday, July 9, 2027.
