Senegal migrant boat sinking, Digi Mart USA News (off the coast of Senegal): At least 21 migrants died on Saturday evening after the boat they were traveling on sank off the coast of Senegal. The exact number of people on board is not known, and authorities have so far recovered 21 bodies, though they believe there were probably many more.

No survivors have been reported at this time. The vessel sank approximately 180 kilometers north of the capital, Dakar.

It is not clear where the boat was headed, but it is plausible that its destination was the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. In recent years, increasing numbers of people have departed from the coasts of West Africa, particularly from Mali and Senegal, in an attempt to reach the Canaries.

The route is extremely dangerous, in part because of ocean currents.
