Disability Living Allowance appeals review petition, Digi Mart USA News (United Kingdom): Disability Living Allowance (DLA) claimants could face a major change to their appeals after a petition called on the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to take action.

A petition on the Parliamentary website has urged the DWP to carry out an “urgent review” of the DLA appeals system. The petition, created by Clara Jennings, closes on 21 April 2027.

The petition states that the signatories want an urgent review into what they believe is the administrative collapse of the DLA appeals system. They are specifically concerned about the time taken by the DWP to provide response bundles required by the Courts service to hear cases.

The petition argues that the DLA appeals system has collapsed into severe judicial gridlock, denying access to justice for vulnerable children. It cites backlogs of DWP appeal cases reaching 129,000, DLA appeals surging by 187%, and families waiting an average of 37 weeks.

The signatories say they feel this is a breach of their human rights.

If the petition receives 10,000 signatures, the Labour Party government will respond to it. If it receives 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in Parliament.

DLA is being replaced by other benefits, and existing claims may end. In England and Wales, claimants will receive a letter stating when this will happen and how to apply for Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

Whether a claimant is affected depends on their age. Those born on or before 8 April 1948 can continue to receive DLA as long as they still have care or mobility needs.

Those born after 8 April 1948 will be reassessed for PIP instead.
