Mamadou Coulibaly Monaco goal celebration disciplinary risk, Digi Mart USA News: Mamadou Coulibaly scored the only goal for Monaco in a 1-1 draw at Le Mans in Ligue 1, but he now faces a possible sanction for his celebration. The move is identical to one made by teammate Paris Brunner about six weeks earlier.
Coulibaly scored just before halftime, five minutes before the break, after taking the ball from goalkeeper Kocik following a loose pass from Voyer and finishing into an empty net. Nothing about the goal itself was questioned, but his celebration drew attention.
He slid on his knees and then mimed a throat-slitting gesture with his thumb under his chin.
The league’s disciplinary commission does not look favorably on such gestures. Coulibaly was not sanctioned by the referee.
At halftime he was asked about the gesture and said it was a dedication to a friend who had told him to do it. After the match in the mixed zone, he apologized, saying he had not thought it would have negative consequences.
The case is considered serious because of the precedent set by Brunner. After making the same gesture during Monaco’s 1-1 draw against Racing on September 12, Brunner was suspended by the league’s disciplinary commission for two firm matches and two more suspended matches.
Coulibaly could face a similar outcome and may be at risk of missing an upcoming match, such as the home game against Auxerre on November 21 or the trip to Lyon on November 29.
