Sweden reinstates internal border controls, Digi Mart USA News (Sweden): Sweden’s government has decided to reinstate internal border controls for six months, according to a report published by Expressen. Sweden has maintained temporary internal border controls since 2015, and the new decision extends that approach.
The government says there is a “serious threat” to public order and Sweden’s internal security. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (M) said the threat includes a heightened sabotage risk to Sweden and other EU member states, a concern the Swedish Security Service recently reported.
Strömmer linked the situation to Russia’s full-scale invasion of and ongoing aggression against Ukraine. He said the controls would give authorities such as the Swedish Police Authority and the Swedish Customs Service more tools to identify and act against potential threats and dangerous incoming persons.
The government also said it has observed more “hostile actors” moving and operating within the Schengen area in the shadow of Russia’s war. Several other Schengen states currently maintain internal border controls.
