Democrats midterm election gains and swings against Trump: Democrats Post Sweeping Midterm Gains: Democrats made gains in 99 per cent of US counties, with notable double-digit swings in Senate, House and governor races, including flips in North Carolina, Kansas and Ohio's governor contest. Analysts point to candidate strengths, scandals and anti-Trump sentiment as key factors.

Democrats midterm election gains and swings against Trump, Digi Mart USA News: Democrats won a decisive victory in the midterm elections, making gains in 99 per cent of US counties in a historic sweep that caused Republican strongholds to crumble, according to a report published by i News.

The party increased its vote share among almost all measured demographics in age, gender, income and ethnicity. It currently leads the national popular vote by a 13-point margin, the largest for either party in decades.

With dozens of House races still uncalled, Democrats are on course to secure their largest majority in Congress in more than three decades. The party’s map of Senate seats will also expand to new locations such as Kansas, Texas, and North and South Carolina.

Some standout victories included notable double-digit swings compared with the last time the seats were contested: generally 2020 for Senate seats, 2024 for House seats and 2022 for governor races, apart from a few specific exceptions.

Democrats were strongly tipped to take the swing state of North Carolina, but candidate Roy Cooper delivered a landslide for the party’s first Senate flip of election night. Cooper faced an untested opponent after the previous incumbent, Thom Tillis, retired.

Durham University professor David Andersen said Cooper is a very popular official in the state, a well-liked and respected former governor with widespread name recognition.

James Talarico became the first Democrat this century to win a Senate seat in Texas. Andersen believes Talarico was also fortunate to face scandal-plagued Ken Paxton, whom he described as one of the worst Republican candidates in history.

Paxton was endorsed by President Donald Trump in his primary victory over longtime incumbent John Cornyn, according to the report.

Kansas sending a Democrat to the Senate for the first time in 94 years ranked among the biggest shocks of the night. Pastor Adam Hamilton proved a more effective campaigner than Republican rival Roger Marshall, a doctor tainted by a record of suing patients over medical bills.

Swansea University political researcher Louis Bromfield said placing faith at the heart of a campaign helped in a state where faith is at the forefront of many communities.

Andersen also pointed to the economic damage of Trump’s policies in the largely rural state, with tariffs hitting farmers’ exports and immigration raids targeting undocumented migrants who provide labor for many farms.

In South Carolina, Darline Graham lasted less than six months in a seat her brother Lindsey Graham, who passed away in July, had held for more than 20 years. Bromfield believes Trump’s influence was central to the defeat, noting that Trump pushed heavily for her to run again despite a lack of political experience and that she aligned herself with his tariffs.

Andersen said she admitted not knowing much about foreign policy during a debate.

Some of the largest House swings came after Republican gerrymandering redrew congressional district borders. Democrats still won seats in areas designed to reinforce Republicans, including Texas’ 15th district, where singer Bobby Pulido won by 25 points in a previously red seat.

Andersen points to the Latino population turning against Trump over issues such as deportations, after swinging behind him in 2024.

Democrats scored a 36-point swing in deep-red Kentucky after sixth district Republican incumbent Andy Barr vacated his seat to run for the state’s Senate seat. Democrats also flipped Indiana’s fifth district with a 22-point turnaround over three-term veteran Victoria Spartz.

Democrats also won governor races with large swings. Amy Acton engineered a 33-point swing to defeat Trump ally Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio, with analysts pointing to a controversial ad featuring Acton’s estranged mother as one of several failings in his campaign.

In Iowa, Rob Sand won praise for a 29-point turnaround in his gubernatorial campaign after resisting Republican waves in previous elections.

In New York City, Democrats celebrated at a bar in the Harlem neighborhood on Tuesday night, with some calling the result a revolution. The Democratic Socialists of America, founded more than four decades ago, opposes both the Republican Party and moderate Democrats, and several of its members celebrated victories, including the Los Angeles mayor-elect and eight others elected to Congress.

The group now claims more than 120,000 members.

From January, Democrats will have a majority in the House to impeach Trump, but not the two-thirds majority in the Senate needed for conviction and removal from office. Many on the party’s left want to aggressively go after Trump, and the issue is expected to be a hot topic when the Democratic caucus convenes next week.
