Renovated Tampico Maritime Customs House to bring investment, jobs and tourism, Digi Mart USA News (Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico): The former Maritime Customs House of the Port of Tampico will soon be added to the region’s tourism offerings, integrating into tours that already include museums, walks through the historic center, the Laguna del Carpintero, restaurants and the lively nightlife, according to Benjamín Hernández Rodríguez, Secretary of Tourism of Tamaulipas.
He said that, in parallel, Tamaulipas is working with at least five other Gulf of Mexico states, including Veracruz and Campeche, on a project to create a network of cruise ship stops in the region. Because of the depth of the Port of Tampico, the plan contemplates the arrival of small and medium-sized vessels.
Hernández Rodríguez explained that infrastructure data is already being shared and that the state actively participates in meetings and conventions, such as those held in Miami, Florida, to attract these operations. He described the arrival of cruise ships as an important benefit that is not far off and that advances alongside the conversion of the former Customs House.
According to the source, restoration of the building is progressing positively under the coordination of the Secretariat of the Navy and the Administration of the National Port System (Asipona) of Tampico, led by Ángel Fernando Cervantes González, with supervision from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).
Hernández Rodríguez said this joint effort, driven by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya, aims to promote investment, generate employment and advance prosperity in the region’s communities.
Once the building is restored, processes will open for installing tourist spaces such as restaurants, craft shops, cafés and a museum, among other establishments.
The goal is to integrate the Customs House with the waterfront boardwalk and open the first stage of the full conversion of the area. Work is underway to have the building ready as soon as possible, ideally before or during the National Meeting of Magic Towns (Pueblos Mágicos), scheduled for November 26–29, 2026, so that guided tours can be offered to visitors, he concluded.
