Mexican Navy seizes 1,149 kilograms of cocaine-like substance off Chiapas and Oaxaca, Digi Mart USA News (Pacific Ocean, off the coasts of Chiapas and Oaxaca, Mexico): Elements of Mexico’s Secretariat of the Navy (Marina), operating through the Mexican Navy in its Coast Guard role, seized 32 packages containing approximately 1,149 kilograms of a substance with characteristics similar to cocaine. One suspected lawbreaker was also detained in two actions carried out off the coasts of Chiapas and Oaxaca in the Pacific Ocean.
The actions resulted from maritime patrol and surveillance tours conducted by naval personnel. In the first event, 16 packages with approximately 629 kilograms of suspected cocaine were seized, while in the second intervention, another 16 packages with about 520 kilograms of the same substance were located.
The official ministerial weight of the total seized amount is pending confirmation by the competent authority. The suspect was read his rights under the law and, together with the suspected drugs, was placed at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), with support from the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), for the preparation of the corresponding investigation files.
According to the agency, the seizures represent an economic impact of 272 million 898 thousand 198 pesos, a figure it said weakens the financial and operational structure of criminal groups operating in Mexican Pacific waters. In the current administration, the Navy has accumulated more than 97 tons of cocaine seized at sea.
Once the competent authority determines the ministerial weight of the Chiapas and Oaxaca seizure, that amount will be added to the agency’s historical total. Both actions form part of the permanent maritime, air and land surveillance operations carried out by the Secretariat of the Navy through the Mexican Navy to inhibit illicit activities in national waters.
The Mexican Navy stressed that these interventions aim to weaken the operational capabilities of criminal groups and strengthen the rule of law in Mexican maritime zones. The agency reiterated that continuous patrolling in the Pacific will remain a central part of its maritime security strategy in the coming months.
The Pacific seizure adds to other recent actions by the federal security cabinet against drug trafficking by sea, with a focus on corridors connecting the southern coasts of Mexico with the rest of the continent.
