Mexican Peso Holds Gains Against Dollar as Markets Weigh Banxico Decision

Mexican peso exchange rate against the U.S. dollar: The peso opened Thursday, November 5, at 18.61 per dollar, holding much of its recent gains as investors weigh falling U.S. Treasury yields, Asian market losses, and an upcoming Banxico interest rate decision.

Mexican peso exchange rate against the U.S. dollar, Digi Mart USA News: The Mexican peso began Thursday, November 5, with relative stability against the dollar, opening at 18.61 pesos per unit and retaining much of the gains made in the previous session. The currency’s movement comes amid international caution, volatility in stock markets, and expectations about upcoming economic decisions in the United States and Mexico.

According to Laura Torres, investment director at IMB Capital Quants, the exchange rate is finding some support in the decline of U.S. Treasury bond yields.

The 10-year Treasury rate stood at 4.84%, a move that helps reduce pressure on emerging-market currencies by changing the relative appeal of U.S. financial assets.

The international outlook, however, shows signs of caution. Asian markets recorded sharp declines, led by semiconductor manufacturers.

Samsung and SK Hynix fell more than 7%, pulling the Kospi index down 5.2%. Brent crude extended its downward trend and traded at $93.94 per barrel, reflecting investors’ prudent stance toward economic, technological and trade risks.

Domestically, markets are focused on the release of economic indicators from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), particularly Gross Fixed Investment and Consumer Confidence. The most important event of the day, however, is the monetary policy decision of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico).

The market expects the central bank to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 6.50%. Torres said maintaining this level would preserve the appeal of the interest rate differential with the United States, which could support investment flows into Mexico.

The outlook also includes statements by President Claudia Sheinbaum regarding the U.S. election results and the possibility of opening a new phase of review of the bilateral relationship.

Expectations of a less abrupt trade negotiation are also helping to moderate uncertainty around the Mexican economy, particularly over possible changes to U.S. trade policies.

For Thursday’s session, Torres expects the dollar could trade within a range of 18.50 to 18.74 pesos, in a scenario of technical consolidation for the Mexican currency. If the peso strengthens further, supported by stronger investment data and a Banxico decision to hold the rate at 6.50%, it could move toward support levels between 18.44 and 18.52 pesos per dollar.

If volatility in international technology stocks increases or Mexican consumption indicators weaken, the exchange rate could rebound toward resistance between 18.68 and 18.78 pesos.

Torres warned that international market movements and monetary policy decisions will be decisive in determining the currency’s direction during the session. With the peso opening at 18.61 per dollar, the currency retains part of its recent gains, though it still faces risks linked to international financial volatility.

The upcoming indicators will be key in determining whether the peso can extend its appreciation or sees an adjustment in the coming sessions.
