Gran Premio de México attendance record 2026, Digi Mart USA News (Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Mexico City): According to a report from El Coahuilense, the 2026 edition of the Mexico Grand Prix recorded 405,363 attendees over three days, setting a new attendance record at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Daily attendance was 102,122 on Friday, 147,889 on Saturday and 155,352 on Sunday. The 2026 total exceeded the 404,958 spectators recorded in 2024 and the 401,326 counted in 2025.
The Formula 1 race in Mexico has a long history. The first stage ran from 1963 to 1970 at the Magdalena Mixhuca circuit.
After a security incident at the 1970 race, when about 200,000 spectators attended and some people invaded parts of the track, Mexico left the calendar for 16 years.
Efforts to bring the race back began in December 1982, when Sandalio Sainz de la Maza, then head of sports promotion for the former Federal District, traveled to the Monaco Grand Prix with the backing of President Miguel de la Madrid to negotiate Mexico’s return. Businessmen Julián and José Abed also took part, and José Abed founded the Organización Mexicana del Deporte Automovilístico Internacional (OMDAI) in 1985 and led the organizing committee from 1986 to 1992.
Formula 1 returned to Mexico on October 12, 1986, after the Magdalena Mixhuca circuit was remodeled and its layout shortened for safety reasons. Gerhard Berger of Benetton won that race, Ayrton Senna took pole position and Alain Prost finished second.
The second stage ended in 1992, and Mexico stayed off the calendar for 23 years. The race returned in 2015 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
The 2026 edition also featured the return of Sergio “Checo” Pérez to Formula 1 as a driver for Cadillac, after a year away from the category, coinciding with the new attendance record.
