Pope Leo XIV visit to Our Lady of Guadalupe Basilica in Mexico, Digi Mart USA News (Vatican City): Pope Leo XIV will visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, although no date has yet been confirmed. María Montserrat Alvarado, a Mexican citizen and the new prefect of the Dicastery for Communication of the Holy See, made the announcement.
Alvarado, the first lay woman to lead the Vatican’s communications ministry, took office on November 1. She said she will be responsible for formally announcing the apostolic trip once the agenda is finalized.
This is consistent with earlier remarks by Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher about a possible tour of the United States and Mexico that could take place in 2027.
The announcement was made as part of the presentation of the pope’s upcoming South American tour, scheduled from November 6 to 17 and including Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni confirmed that the pope’s international schedule will remain unchanged and will not require special health measures, following surgery on October 13 to remove an adenocarcinoma from his right lung.
During the South American trip, the pontiff will meet with heads of state: Yamandú Orsi in Uruguay, Javier Milei in Argentina and Keiko Fujimori in Peru. The visit to Peru holds particular significance for Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, who holds Peruvian citizenship, served as bishop of Chiclayo and lived in the country for several years.
