Sainte-Barbe festival in the Hauts-de-France mining basin, Digi Mart USA News (Hauts-de-France, France): As Christmas approaches, the mining basin of Hauts-de-France is set to play with fire. From December 4 to 6, the ninth edition of the Sainte-Barbe festival will bring together pyrotechnic concerts, monumental installations and giant figures suspended in the air.

The event is entirely free, and organizers aim for at least 60,000 visitors, after more than 55,000 spectators in 2025, compared with 10,000 when it was created in 2018.

The festival is organized by Lens Tourisme around December 4, the feast day of the patron saint of miners, firefighters and pyrotechnicians, and revisits a local heritage. “When we started in 2018, the Sainte-Barbe tradition still lived on, but it was beginning to fade with the disappearance of the former miners,” said Sophie Wilhelm, director of the organization.

From processions to performances by national and international companies, the celebration has gradually grown in scale without giving up its roots.

This year the event opens Friday, December 4 in Lens with a street show from 6 p.m., followed at 8:45 p.m. by a pyrotechnic concert combining music, flames and imposing machines in the gardens of the Jean-Perrin faculty.

On Saturday, the festivities take over two former mining sites. At the Base 11/19 in Loos-en-Gohelle, an offbeat funfair brings together games, treats and a fire performance, followed by the traditional climb of the slag heaps at nightfall.

At the 9-9bis site in Oignies, urban dance and showers of sparks precede an evening of concerts at the Métaphone.

On Sunday, the Louvre-Lens park hosts the final, where immense aerial silhouettes will rise into the sky to tell the story of nature reclaiming its rights from industry. “It is the first time we are welcoming huge helium-inflated puppets,” Wilhelm noted.

A fireworks display will conclude the creation.

Far from traditional Christmas markets, the festival uses slag heaps, former pithead buildings and industrial structures as its settings. “On these evenings, we highlight all our major mining sites and their redevelopment,” the Lens Tourisme director said.

The event draws tourists from several French regions and from Belgium, as well as, according to her, from Lorraine and Luxembourg, where mining history resonates particularly. Hotels are fully booked during the evenings.

While companies and technicians occupy some rooms, Wilhelm also notes significant tourist attendance, with some visitors now reserving long weekends specifically for the event. Lens Tourisme supports this with a turnkey package combining overnight stays and guided tours around the territory’s transformation, summed up by the phrase “from the mine to the Louvre.”

The festival has also grown in budget: roughly 300,000 euros in 2018, it has since more than doubled. Around the shows, the public will find a lively village, food trucks and a Sainte-Barbe beer brewed for the occasion by La Drache in Carvin.

The festivities even begin November 27 with “Les Étincelles,” a series of events in about ten towns. Ahead of a tenth edition announced for 2027, organizers hope this year to pass the 60,000-spectator mark and reinforce the Sainte-Barbe’s place among winter events.
