Mathieu Lefèvre named interim government spokesperson in France, Digi Mart USA News (Paris, France): Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon is about to go on maternity leave and will hand the interim role to another minister who supports Édouard Philippe, according to information obtained by Le Parisien. The change follows two days of confusion at the top of the French state.
According to Le Parisien’s sources, the change is not a cabinet reshuffle or a broader adjustment. A presidential adviser described it as a “temporary adaptation.” President Emmanuel Macron, in consultation with Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, is expected to announce by decree in the coming hours the appointment of Mathieu Lefèvre as government spokesperson.
Lefèvre already serves as minister delegate for the ecological transition and will add the spokesperson role for the duration of Bregeon’s maternity leave. Her pregnancy is due to reach term next week.
Earlier this Wednesday, Bregeon led the weekly press briefing following the Council of Ministers and, two days before, gave a morning interview on France Info.
Roland Lescure, her supervising minister at Bercy, will take over her other portfolio, energy, during her absence. In the same reporting, Le Parisien also noted that Michel Fournier has been replaced at the Ministry of Rural Affairs by Arnaud Viala.
The report is based on a single publisher article and has not been independently verified.
