Geoffrey Doumayrou France rugby defense coach appointment, Digi Mart USA News: France’s rugby union squad has welcomed a new member to its coaching staff, and his character is expected to draw strong reactions. Tasked with restoring order to a French defense that has been particularly porous in recent months, Geoffrey Doumayrou has joined Fabien Galthié’s staff.

The former French international center, known for his demanding standards and sometimes difficult temperament, is the subject of revealing testimony from former coaches and teammates. With only two seasons of experience as a coach, Doumayrou inherits an important assignment.

France conceded twelve tries in its three matches in November 2025 and still showed serious defensive weaknesses against Scotland and England. According to the report, however, the new assistant brings solid credentials: under his responsibility, Montpellier finished last season with the best defense in the Top 14, a level the club is maintaining this season.

Former Stade Rochelais teammate Romain Sazy recalled a player who already placed considerable importance on defensive organization. Speaking to Sud-Ouest, he said the new staff member clearly enjoyed leading that area: “He was our defensive leader.

You could see he was drawn to that sector and that he loved the work without the ball.”

That passion came with a real ability to organize teammates and bring them along. “He liked to control and regulate the defensive system.

He had the qualities required: reading the game, positioning, communication. He put energy into bringing others along.”

Behind that skill, however, lies a particularly demanding temperament. Jean-Baptiste Elissalde, who coached him during his second spell at Montpellier, remembers a player capable of defending his convictions with great firmness.

The former coach described a man who had to be convinced with solid arguments: “He was very demanding of himself and of others. He could hold his positions quite firmly, while remaining open to discussion.

But you really had to prove to him why you were right. When he asks you a question and you don’t know the answer, it doesn’t stop there.

You tell him ‘I’ll answer you later,’ you work, and you come back to see him. Otherwise, it doesn’t suit him.”

Xavier Garbajosa, who also worked with Doumayrou at La Rochelle, confirmed his reputation as an extremely committed player. The former La Rochelle coach described a competitor who left very little room for the unexpected: “He was a somewhat extreme guy, who always wanted to train and play, because he leaves no room for things he doesn’t control.”

His intensity could, however, create tensions with those who did not share his speed of understanding or level of commitment. Garbajosa acknowledged that this temperament could sometimes complicate relationships: “He was very hard on himself and on others.

He needed to understand everything, grasped things very quickly, and sometimes accepted mistakes poorly or lacked patience with those who understood more slowly.”

Several former teammates have affectionately described his character as “gruff,” “hardheaded,” or “not the most fun.”

Could such a strong personality become an obstacle in his new role? Elissalde believes Doumayrou will need to learn to adapt how he conveys his convictions: “He is learning and will continue to.

Right now, everything is going well for him. One day it may go less well, and with experience we will see how he can convey his convictions differently, perhaps a little less authoritarian.

I am not at all worried about him.”

Former teammate and now friend Vincent Rattez admitted he did not necessarily expect to see Doumayrou become a coach so quickly after his retirement from playing in 2024. The former winger explained why his temperament could be a challenge in managing a group: “To manage 40 guys, you need flexibility, not to upset or lower morale.

He doesn’t necessarily observe the niceties, but on substance, he is often right.”

Even so, Rattez considers that this frankness can also be an asset at the highest level. He defended his former teammate’s demands: “Yes, he has character, but at this level, isn’t that mandatory?

Direct people are better. And his players know the standards he imposed on himself.”

Long tactical discussions were also part of Doumayrou’s daily routine at La Rochelle, notably with Vincent Rattez and Jérémy Sinzelle. Xavier Garbajosa also remembers many discussions about game direction, sometimes particularly heated.

He frankly summed up the personality of Fabien Galthié’s new assistant: “A guy like Geoffrey, you either like him or you don’t. I don’t think he has 200 million friends, but I’m sure his circle of friends is very, very loyal.

Once you know how he works, you can take him wherever you want.”

With 13 caps for France, Doumayrou already knows the environment of the national team, although his international career was limited by strong competition, injuries and, according to his own past statements, a sometimes polarizing personality. His record as a player for France stands at three wins and ten defeats.

Now, the former center must put his demanding approach at the service of a group aiming to win the 2027 Rugby World Cup. He will remain on the Montpellier staff and will work with the French team during international windows, with a priority of restoring defensive solidity to a side that has conceded far too many points in its recent outings.
