Marie Buchan, USA News (Selly Oak, West Midlands): Department for Work and Pensions ‘Benefits Queen’ mum-of-8 Marie Buchan says she has finally secured a job. The 43-year-old, who has faced criticism after receiving £500,000 in government funds over the years, is entering the workforce after spending most of the last 25 years living on DWP handouts.
Speaking to the Sun, she remarked that not everyone can claim Universal Credit indefinitely, adding that the situation has gotten out of control and the country cannot cope. When asked if she would consider a full-time job, she stated that it is going to have to come to that now, noting her age as 44 and explaining that her life has previously been dedicated to raising children and living on benefits.
The single mother from Selly Oak in the West Midlands stated that she currently receives £1,200 per month in Universal Credit and Child Benefit. However, she noted this amount is no longer sufficient and indicated she may need to return to work, stating she would accept a suitable job immediately if it could accommodate her family commitments.
Her comments follow the Labour Party Autumn Budget and remarks from political figures regarding welfare reform. Andy Burnham stated an intention to reduce the welfare bill as soon as possible, though he could not guarantee it before the next general election, while warning against crude cuts and emphasizing sustainable employment. Meanwhile, the Conservative Party accused Labour of being addicted to welfare.
Ms. Buchan also addressed recent energy bill assistance, noting that while households received £100 off, the amount does little when raising a large family at her four-bedroom property where seven of her children still live.
