France Prepares for Nationwide General Strike and Protests on Thursday, November 5

France general strike: An inter-union coalition has called for a nationwide day of strikes and demonstrations across France on Thursday, November 5, bringing together public and private sector workers, youth organizations, and the gilets jaunes movement to demand wage increases and action on purchasing power.

France general strike, USA News (France): Following weeks of youth mobilization and protests concerning the cost of living, an inter-union coalition has called on employees to walk off the job and join nationwide street demonstrations on Thursday, November 5. The mobilization brings together organizations including the CFDT, CGT, FO, UNSA, and FSU, seeking concrete responses from the government and employers regarding purchasing power.

For the first time since the start of the academic and professional term, the mobilization spans both the private and public sectors. Core demands include wage increases, the preservation of public services, the defense of employment, and a fairer distribution of wealth for workers, young people, and retirees alike. Cyril Chabanier of the CFTC noted that the November 5 demonstration is important to maintain pressure and ensure that measures under discussion materialize. Youth organizations and the gilets jaunes coordination, active in recent weeks, have also joined the movement.

The General Confederation of Labour (CGT) has published an online map detailing more than a one hundred events confirmed throughout the country. While unions will oversee the marches, security concerns persist following recent weeks of unrest, particularly looting incidents after the October 17 demonstrations. Christelle Thieffinne noted that while security conditions appear met, trade federations in retail, banking, and insurance retain some concerns.

Union Demands and Outlook Beyond November 5

Frederic Souillot, general secretary of FO, expressed hope that the executive branch will recognize the warnings issued by unions over recent months. While most participating unions do not currently advocate for extending the strike beyond Thursday, Caroline Cheve of the FSU stated that her organization believes a single day will not suffice.

Meanwhile, the gilets jaunes coordination is already looking ahead to a potential “Act IV,” calling for continued blockades, strikes, and demonstrations on November 6 and 7.
