Cargo ship collides with Centrumbrug bridge in Izegem, Belgium, Digi Mart USA News (Izegem, Belgium): On Saturday morning a cargo ship sailed into the Centrumbrug over the Roeselare-Leie canal in Izegem. The impact completely destroyed the ship’s wheelhouse.

The skipper managed to jump out of the cabin just in time but was injured. Witnesses on the bridge saw him leave the wheelhouse to get to safety.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance. The other crew members were not hurt.

Geert Weymeis of the Vlaamse Waterweg said, “No structural damage has been found, so the bridge did not need to be closed.” After the collision, another crew member was able to back the ship a considerable distance. Eventually another cargo ship helped push it against the bank.

The vessel was then able to moor at the Zuidkaai.
