The Current held a pep rally at the school to encourage students ahead of the match. The school was the first stop on Current midfielder Croix Bethune’s book tour.

After the visit, third grader Mari Everett posted a sign in a school hallway. It read: “Do you like playing soccer at recess?

If you are a girl in the second and third grade you can sign up for a girls only soccer team.”

“I made the sign. I want more girls to learn about soccer and have fun with it,” Everett said.

“I see myself as a good soccer player, a strong soccer player and an amazing soccer player.”

Ben Aken, the Current’s vice president of community relations, said he is glad to see students inspired by the team. “It’s just so incredible to see students like Mari inspired by the Current to make sure there’s girls soccer for her and for her classmates,” Aken said.

Principal Monchelle Gordon said the event came from a community partnership. “This came to be with just creating a great community partnership,” Gordon said.

Gordon said she hopes students take a message from the partnership. “The message I hope this sends to each and every one of our students is one that they can do anything that they put their mind to.

Secondly, that with our goals and our discipline that we have, just life in general, not only do you have to go after it and go for it, but also when you do it, do it and execute it well,” Gordon said.

Students practiced a “KC Baby” chant and plan to watch the match Saturday. The Current and Angel City FC play at 11 a.m.

Saturday on KCTV5.
