Isak Johannesson Bundesliga Goal of the Month nomination, Digi Mart USA News (Cologne, Germany): Cologne midmidfielder Isak Johannesson has been nominated for the Bundesliga Goal of the Month, based on a spectacular strike during his team’s 2-1 derby win over Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Rhein-Energie-Stadion.
The volley produced ecstatic scenes in the stands. It is one of ten October goals the league has put up for a public vote.
The Icelandic midfielder struck the ball from distance with his instep after Borna Sosa’s free kick was headed clear by Gladbach’s Isac Lidberg straight to him, and his shot found the top left corner in the 26th minute, giving Cologne the lead.
Coach René Wagner said after the match that the goal was “important for us, because we had an issue there,” referring to set pieces, where Cologne has rarely posed a threat.
Voting runs through the Bundesliga website until Sunday, November 8, at 23:59. Cologne has promoted the vote on its website and on Instagram, asking fans to decide the outcome.
Cologne players have won the award before. Ragnar Ache took the February 2026 ARD Sportschau vote with a bicycle kick against Hoffenheim, receiving over 71 percent of the vote, and Timo Hübers was listed in May 2023 for a heel goal against Hertha BSC.
Overall, 37 goals by Cologne players have been named Goal of the Month, and Lukas Podolski leads with 13 such awards.
