2026 midterm elections Latino and Mexican-American voter impact, Digi Mart USA News: Eleven years after Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign with remarks describing Mexicans sent to the United States as “rapists,” “criminals” and “the worst,” the 2026 midterm elections delivered a major political setback for him, according to a publisher report from La Crónica de Hoy. The report credits a decisive turnout by Latino voters, including many of Mexican origin, for reshaping the balance of power in Washington.

Democrats regained control of the Senate and moved toward a majority in the House of Representatives. Polling cited in the report had shown Democrats holding a 27-point advantage among Latino voters, with more than half of that electorate saying their vote was a way to check the president.

In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa, of Mexican descent, defeated Governor Greg Abbott and became the first Latina to govern the state, ending a run of more than three decades without a Democratic governor there. Her campaign focused on the high cost of living, corruption and access to economic opportunity.

Regional music performer Bobby Pulido won a decisive victory over Republican Monica De La Cruz in Texas’s 15th congressional district. The report says he sought to connect with Hispanic voters on family economics, wealth building and support for Rio Grande Valley communities.

In California, Xavier Becerra, of Mexican descent, won the gubernatorial election, becoming the first Latino governor of the state. The report notes that Los Angeles hosts the largest community of people of Mexican origin in the world outside Mexico City, and cites The Washington Post in describing California as a major Democratic stronghold.

In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first Muslim to serve in the chamber, according to the report.

He had faced repeated attacks from Trump during the campaign.

The report attributes the Republican losses to inflation, the cost of living, gasoline prices and controversies surrounding the administration, including immigration enforcement by ICE and the war in Iran. After the results were confirmed, Trump said he was “absolutely willing to accept” the outcome, said he would work with Democrats over the next two years, and asserted that he would have won by a landslide had he been on the ballot.

He also warned that he would use his veto power against Democratic initiatives he opposes.
