Pope Leo XIV visit to Mexico, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City): On Tuesday, November 3, 2026, María Montserrat Alvarado, a Mexican national who heads the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication as its new prefect, confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will visit Mexico to go to the sanctuary of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
The confirmation came during the presentation of the pope’s apostolic tour program to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, scheduled from November 6 to 17. “The Holy Father will indeed go to see Our Lady of Guadalupe,” Alvarado told reporters, adding that she would officially announce the date of the trip when the time comes.
Alvarado, who was born in Mexico City and is the first lay woman to lead a dicastery of the Roman Curia, did not specify a concrete date. The visit is not expected to take place in 2026, and some reports point to the possibility of 2027, as part of a possible trip to the United States in which the pope would include a stop in Mexico.
The statement reinforces the pontiff’s previously expressed interest in entrusting his pontificate to the Virgin of Guadalupe, as well as repeated invitations from the Mexican government and the country’s church hierarchy. The Holy See has not yet published a formal communiqué with the itinerary or exact date.
The news has generated anticipation among Mexican faithful, given the deep roots of Guadalupan devotion and the fact that Mexico is home to one of the largest Catholic communities in the world.
When was the last time a pope visited Mexico?
The last papal visit to Mexico took place from February 12 to 17, 2016, when Pope Francis made a six-day apostolic journey through the country.
During his stay, he visited Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Chiapas, Michoacán and Chihuahua, where he led large masses and held meetings with authorities, church representatives, indigenous communities, young people, families and people deprived of liberty.
His agenda included a visit to the National Palace and a meeting with then-president Enrique Peña Nieto, a mass in Ecatepec, meetings with indigenous communities, a religious celebration in San Cristóbal de las Casas, and a meeting with families in Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
He then traveled to Morelia, where he met with young people and priests, and concluded his tour in Ciudad Juárez, with activities at a prison, meetings with workers and a mass on the border between Mexico and the United States. The pontiff returned to Rome on February 17, 2016.
