Pope Leo XIV possible visit to Mexico and Basilica of Guadalupe, Digi Mart USA News: The possibility that Pope Leo XIV could include Mexico in his upcoming travels through Latin America has generated interest among Catholic faithful and Mexican authorities. Expectations grew after a statement related to his international agenda was interpreted as a sign that the pontiff could visit the country, particularly the Basilica of Guadalupe.
However, there is an important difference between comments about a possible meeting between the leader of the Catholic Church and Mexicans and the official announcements of the Holy See. The information began circulating after a press conference related to his upcoming South American tour, in which Mexican official María Montserrat Álvarado of the Vatican participated.
As of November 3, 2026, the Vatican has not confirmed a visit by Pope Leo XIV to Mexico, nor has it published dates, cities or an official program for a possible apostolic trip to the country.
The possibility, however, has been raised in political circles. In August, President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her interest in the pontiff visiting Mexican territory during his Latin American tour.
The president said her government was in communication with the Holy See to seek consideration of Mexico in his plans.
The expectation is also linked to Guadalupan devotion and the importance of the Basilica of Guadalupe for millions of Catholics. A possible papal visit would have special significance for the Mexican religious community, although for now there is no public commitment from the Holy See to carry it out.
For this reason, reports placing the trip in 2027 should be treated as speculation rather than a confirmed announcement.
The origin of the reports lay in remarks by María Montserrat Alvarado, a Mexican who recently assumed the prefecture of the Dicastery for Communication of the Holy See. Her participation took place during a meeting with journalists in which Matteo Bruni, director of the Vatican Press Office, presented details of the tour Leo XIV will make through South America.
According to Valentina Alazraki, a journalist specializing in religious affairs, the confusion arose when Alvarado, the new prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, commented at the press conference about the Latin America trip that Pope Leo XIV would visit the Virgin of Guadalupe; she was referring to the Casavalle parish in Uruguay, Alazraki wrote on her X account.
Alazraki also said that Pope Leo does wish to visit Mexico.
While expectations for a possible visit to Mexico continue, Leo XIV has already set his next apostolic tour of South America. The official itinerary covers twelve days of activities, from November 6 to 17, 2026, with religious encounters, Eucharistic celebrations, meetings with authorities and contact with various communities.
The tour includes three countries and ten cities. The Vatican has announced the dates for each stop.
The trip holds special meaning for Leo XIV, particularly because of his relationship with Peru, where he carried out an important part of his missionary and pastoral work before becoming pontiff.
The tour will conclude with his return to Rome on November 17. Mexico does not appear among the destinations included in this official program.
