Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson reunion in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Digi Mart USA News: A bow, a bakery boy and a pair of actors who had not played those roles together in over a decade. Some film partnerships fade with their franchise.
Others survive, quietly, in interviews and group chats, until someone finally calls everybody back. In 2026, that call came for one of the most famous duos of the 2010s.
In 2012, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson became Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games, the start of a four-film run that ended in 2015. On the Oct. 28 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Lawrence, now 36, confirmed that both are back in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which opens in theaters on Nov. 20.
“It was unbelievable,” she said of stepping back into the role.
What struck her most was not the costume or the set. It was the people.
“It was so crazy because it was the same crew,” she said. She described the reunion as “so emotional,” and then gave the detail fans immediately latched onto: “Josh and I didn’t walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other.” Her verdict on the whole experience?
“So beautiful.”
Woody Harrelson is also back as Haymitch Abernathy, which makes the reunion feel even more like a family photo retaken years later.
Sunrise on the Reaping is a prequel, set decades before Katniss volunteered as tribute. It follows a young Haymitch, played by Joseph Zada, and is directed by Francis Lawrence, who made three of the original films.
The cast also includes Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Jesse Plemons, Maya Hawke, Mckenna Grace and Glenn Close.
Bringing back the original Katniss and Peeta is a nod to the audience that grew up with them. Many of those first fans are now in their 30s, with jobs, families and a soft spot for the girl on fire.
Lawrence went from rising star to Oscar winner and one of the defining actresses of her generation, while also building a life away from the spotlight. Off screen, she has stayed a style reference too, from split-hem trousers to effortless fall basics.
Hutcherson kept working steadily, and their friendship, by her account, never really paused.
That is what makes reunions like this land. Pop culture loves a return, as Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” moment showed, but the ones that move people are the ones that feel personal.
If you want the full effect, rewatch the first film before the premiere, then the last one. Pay attention to the small moments between Katniss and Peeta, the bread, the cave, the quiet looks, since those are what made the duo stick.
Then go see the prequel with whoever watched the originals with you. The lesson worth borrowing is that some reunions are better shared.
In 2012, they became Katniss and Peeta. Fourteen years later, Jennifer Lawrence says reuniting with Josh Hutcherson was “so beautiful,” and Sunrise on the Reaping lets the rest of us see why on Nov. 20.
