Reyes, 72, was with the director the night they went onstage to accept the Academy’s statuette. He joined the many expressions of grief, including from abroad, over what he described as a sad loss for the film world.

In an Instagram post, Reyes wrote that he was following the embraces and condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the “sensitive and talented artist, beloved director and playful human being.”

Lelio died Friday at his home in the Las Condes district. His family said the death was due to health reasons.

The director, 52, was in the middle of filming his new film, Poeta Chileno, based on the novel of the same name by Alejandro Zambra.
