Taylor Fritz Carlos Alcaraz Paris Masters quarterfinal, Digi Mart USA News (Paris): American Taylor Fritz will face Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz for a place in the semifinals of the Paris Masters 1000, after defeating French player Arthur Fils 6-3, 6-4, according to EFE.
The win was Fritz’s 100th victory in the Masters 1000 category, bringing him closer to the ATP Finals in Turin. It will be the eighth meeting between Alcaraz and Fritz, with the American having won only once before.
Alcaraz reached the quarterfinals after Italian Matteo Berrettini withdrew.
Fritz needs to reach the semifinals to claim one of the two remaining spots at the Turin tournament. If he does, he would eliminate Spain’s Rafael Jodar, 19, from making his debut at the season-ending event.
The 29-year-old American has been in strong form at indoor tournaments this season, winning twelve matches in a row.
Paris will be only the second quarterfinal Fritz has played at a Masters 1000 this year, after Cincinnati, and his 16th in his career. Alcaraz arrived in Paris after winning in Vienna, also indoors, his fourth tournament of the year and his second since a wrist injury kept him out of competition for four months.
Alcaraz opened his tournament against American Alex Michelsen despite having had little practice on court.
Fritz also beat Alcaraz earlier this year at the Laver Cup, the same event where Alcaraz suffered his only loss last year. Fritz became the seventh American to surpass 100 Masters 1000 wins all-time and the eighth active player of any nationality to do so.
Fritz was dominant against Fils, who had home-crowd support but struggled to compete. Fils had won his 39th match of the year in the previous round, a personal best.
The French player, who has reached six Masters 1000 quarterfinals this year, had high hopes for the tournament but could not produce his best tennis in front of his fans.
