Héctor Herrera on Cristiano Ronaldo and MLS, Digi Mart USA News: Cristiano Ronaldo announced his retirement from the Portugal national team on Thursday, closing an extraordinary international career. His legacy will be felt for generations and has inspired countless players, including Mexican midfielder Héctor Herrera, who hopes to see the Portuguese icon move to Major League Soccer and renew his rivalry with Lionel Messi.
Ahead of MLS Decision Day this weekend, Herrera took part in a media roundtable attended by AS, where the Houston Dynamo veteran discussed the possibility of Ronaldo following Messi to MLS. Asked about Ronaldo’s retirement from international soccer, Herrera said: “Words fall short when talking about a player with a career like his.”
Herrera also reflected on facing the Portuguese superstar during his own playing career, an experience he described as “a privilege.” “I’ve had the chance to play against him, and it’s been a pleasure,” Herrera said. “He’s one of those people who inspire you and make you want to be around greatness.”
Herrera faced Ronaldo in five competitive matches. One came at international level, when Mexico faced Portugal at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, while the other four meetings took place in club soccer, in the UEFA Champions League.
His record against the Portuguese forward stands at one win, three draws and one loss.
Herrera refuses to choose between the two superstars, preferring to appreciate the brilliance of both players. In his view, they are unique talents who should be celebrated rather than compared.
“Hopefully he can come here and compete because it would be spectacular to have him in MLS, especially with Messi already here,” Herrera said. “Fans have loved this duo that has given us so many unforgettable moments throughout their careers.”
“I’ve always said there’s no reason to compare them. Players like that are meant to be enjoyed.
They’re two extraordinary footballers, and we’re lucky to have lived through their era and had the chance to face them.”
