Sheinbaum Praises Latino Democratic Wins in U.S. Midterm Elections, Digi Mart USA News (Mexico City): Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo described the results of the U.S. midterm elections as a reflection of “a sentiment of the American people,” after Democrats took control of Congress from Donald Trump’s Republicans.

Speaking at her morning press conference, she particularly celebrated the historic victories of Xavier Becerra in California and Gina Hinojosa in Texas, both of Mexican origin.

Sheinbaum said both winners have family roots in Mexico, with either both parents or one of them born in Mexico. She stressed their connection to their states and to Mexicans, saying it gave her great pleasure to see Mexican Americans achieve this participation and recognition.

Becerra, 68, a former secretary of health under Joe Biden (2021-2025), defeated Republican Steve Hilton to become the first Latino governor of California in more than 150 years, succeeding Gavin Newsom. In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Greg Abbott, who sought a fourth term.

Hinojosa became the first woman and the first Latino person to govern the border state, ending more than three decades of Republican governments there.

Asked how the results might affect bilateral commitments, Sheinbaum declined to speculate on whether pressure from Washington would increase or decrease, saying the outlook should be awaited. She said that regardless of the election result, Mexico seeks the best relationship with the United States while guaranteeing respect for its sovereignty, territorial integrity and collaboration without subordination.

The president said this guideline shapes joint work on trade and security, and that dialogue with U.S. authorities on trade continues normally.

The elections took place amid political disagreements over the migration and economic strategies promoted by the Trump administration.
